Info

Pempheris bexillon is distinguished from other Pempheris species by its striking yellow dorsal fin with black tips, the hatchetfish is common in coral and rocky reefs in the Western Indian Ocean.

An article in WoRMS reports that Pempheris bexillon can produce sounds under natural conditions in the sea, but further confirmation is lacking.
Interested parties can find the report under “Further links”.

Etymology:
The species name “bexillon” comes from the Greek and means “banner or flag”, in reference to the bright yellow and black dorsal fin.
