Info

Spirobranchus bakau is a tubeworm that has so far only been found in a mangrove zone in the Strait of Singapore, a strait between the city-state of Singapore at the southern end of the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian Riau Islands to the south.
The Singapore Strait connects the Strait of Malacca to the west with the South China Sea to the east.

Nothing is (yet) known about the biology of this tubeworm, and there is also no information on its size, with or without a radiolar crest.

Spirobranchus bakau belongs to the Spirobranchus kraussii complex, to which the following species are currently assigned:

Spirobranchus lirianeae from Brazilian
Spirobranchus akitsushima from Japan
Spirobranchus bakau from Singapore
Spirobranchus sinuspersicus from Iran
Spirobranchus krausii from South Africa
Spirobranchus carinifeus from New Zealand

The hypothesis that fertilization and embryonic development of Spirobranchus bakau can occur in the wide range of salinities (19.6 -30.9 psu) and temperatures (25- 31°Celsius) observed in the Strait of Johor was investigated. In a temperature range of 25 -32°Celsius and salinity of 20-32 psu, fertilization success of ≥70% was achieved. However, embryonic development had a narrower salinity tolerance range of 27-32 psu.

Etymology:
The specific epithet 'bakau' in the Malay language refers to mangroves, which are the habitat of this new species.
