Info

Plicopurpura patula (Linnaeus, 1758)

Plicopurpura patula belong to the family Muricidae, commonly called the murex or rock snails. The familiy of Muricidae is a large family of small to large predatory snails. Many of them have an unusual and attractive shell for shell collectors.

Plicopurpura patula has a light brown to dark brown shell. It has a extra large opening , which is why this snail is called the "Widemouth rocksnail" .

Plicopurpura patula predacious, feeding on meat and carrion.

Plicopurpura patula lives in the shallow intertidal zone at or below rocks.Because it lives near the coast, it was easy to collect many of these snails for the production of purple dye. With beginning of the production of chemical dyes the purple snail lost its exclusive meaning.
