Info

In addition to the locations listed above, Paramuricea biscaya also occurs around the Ilhas Selvagens, an archipelago off the coast of Portugal.

The deep-sea coral is usually found on deep-sea clay with pumice and clinker, mainly in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and in the Charlie Gibbs Fracture Zone, a large fracture zone that shifts the Mid-Atlantic Ridge approximately 350 km to the left between Iceland and the Azores.

The photos shown illustrate the negative development of the colony over a longer period of time after the Deep Horizon oil rig exploded in 2010.
The estimated 800 million liters of crude oil spilled as a result caused lasting damage to the Gulf of Mexico and its marine life.

Paramuricea biscaya maintains a mutualistic symbiosis with the brittle star Asteroschema clavigerum Verrill, 1894.
In the case of the damaged coral, the brittle star then also left the dying coral.
