Exostoma ianthinum forms colonies with large, irregular dimensions of up to 25 cm in diameter and 5 cm thick.The color varies from gray to brown speckled.

The surface of the colony is irregularly swollen and the mouth openings of the zooids are irregularly distributed.
There are few very large openings in the cloacal cavities.
The surface of the colony is wrinkled, rubbery, and sometimes thin epibionts can be seen in patches on the surface of the colony.

The tunic of the sea squirt is tough, opaque, and dark brown in formalin; the zooids are irregularly distributed and oriented in all directions.
The oral siphon consists of 6 rounded lobes.
The cloacal siphon is long and cylindrical and arises from the postero-dorsal part of the thorax; it also has 6 lobes.
The gill sac is located below an unperforated area.
The esophagus is very long, followed by a hindgut.
The midgut is narrow before it passes into the hindgut, which is much wider but has no caeca.

The pyloric gland consists of small tubes around the part of the rectum facing the stomach.
The male gonads are located in a cluster of testicular follicles behind the stomach, within the intestinal loop.
No larvae were found in these colonies.
