Info

Pagurus retrorsimanus Wicksten & McLaughlin, 1998

The holotype used to describe Pagurus retrorsimanus is from Redondo Beach, California.

The right scissor hand is greatly enlarged, thick, and whitish (sometimes with a reddish tinge). The walking legs are unbanded and speckled with small red dots, and the antenna is unbanded.

Similar to the much larger Phimochirus californiensis, the right scissor hand is greatly enlarged and mostly white, but in this species the surface of the scissor is not spiny, the antennae are not banded, and the legs lack stripes and bands.

Habitat: Subtidal in rocky areas or sand between rocks, 11–90 m.

The species name " retrorsimanus" refers to the unusual configuration of the right scissor hand, in which the joint between the carpal bones and merus is supposedly twisted counterclockwise.
