Info

The three-finned blenny Enneapterygius sericus was first described in 2024 on the basis of 51 specimens from the Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, Indonesia, Australia and the Solomon Islands.

The new species occurs in relatively shallow, rocky reef areas.

On Yakushima Island, spawning of this species was observed from February to April, and nuptial colored males with black head and abdomen were observed.

The species name "sericus" means "silk" in Latin, which is derived from the shiny white body of the species.

We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Hiroyuki Motomura, who kindly sent us a photo of the new blenny species!

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
