Lessonia is a genus of large seaweed species found exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere and predominantly in the Pacific on the coasts of South America, New Zealand, Tasmania and the Antarctic islands. The genus was described by Jean Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent in 1825.
Lessonia variegata is a species complex consisting of four cryptic species. These are called Lessonia variegata / N (for the northern species), Lessonia variegata / W (for the species around Wellington) and Lessonia variegata / K (for the species around Kaikoura, South Island) and Lessonia variegata / S (for the southern Species).
Lessonia variegata is one of the important habitat-forming algae, found on most rocky coasts in its range.
