Info
Drymonema is a genus of true jellyfish that belongs to its own family, the Drymonematidae. There are currently only three described species: Drymonema dalmatinum, Drymonema gorgo and Drymonema larsoni, which occur in the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
Drymonema was described as a distinct family in 2011 based on DNA evidence and morphological analysis. The first described species, Drymonema larsoni, was named after scientist Ronald G. Larson, who pioneered this species in the 1980s. The new family Drymonematidae was the first addition to true jellyfish (Scyphozoans) described since 1921.
"After a mass sighting of Larson's jellyfish (Drymonema larsoni) in the Gulf of Mexico in 2000, the species and the rest of its genus were placed in a separate family, a new subgroup of the true jellyfish."
Drymonema larsoni preys on other jellyfish species such as Aurelia spp.; Cyanea; Phyllorhiza punctata.
