Info

Rhinolambrus contrarius (Herbst, 1804)

The common name is elbow crab, which doesn't need to be explained in more detail when looking at the photos. They are bottom-dwelling predatory crabs.

Members of this genus Rhinolambrus are very distinctive and can be easily distinguished from other parthenopid genera of the family due to the presence of a “neck”.

The rostrum of Rhinolambrus contrarius is triangular, fairly wide, long and directed downward at an angle of about 45° to the vertical. The spines on the scissors are long and sharp, while those on the legs are lower, smaller, and sparsely distributed. The tips of the scissor fingers are pigmented. The male telson has the shape of an equilateral triangle.

The elbow crab Rhinolambrus contrarius is host to Loxothylacus strandi Boschma, a parasite from the family Sacculinidae.
