Sympagurus dofleini (Balss, 1912)
Sympagurus dofleini belongs to the family Paguridae - right-handed hermit crabs. They are called right-handed hermit crabs because the right claw is significantly larger than the left. Right-handed hermit crabs live in all oceans, from the coasts to the deep sea. Most of the 550+ species remain smaller than their left-handed relatives.
Sympagurus dofleini is a deep-sea hermit crab that can be found from about 100m. Its greatest proven depth is 950m. The type locality used to describe this hermit crab is Japan. It is said to live in pseudo shells secreted by sea anemones and formed into the shape of a snail shell by the hermit crab. If these are not at hand, other snail shells also seem to serve to protect the abdomen.
