Info

The black-spotted grunt is reef-bound species found in schools near coastal reefs during the day, and scatters over sandy substrate at night.
Haemulon maculicauda is also found on deep rocky walls and around massive corals and exposed, shallow rocky reefs in the Gulf of Chiriqui, Panama.

The gray, slightly reddish body has bright spots on the scale centers that form lines along the body.
The tail is dark -maroon or often with a large, round, dark spot at the base.
The reddish interior of the grunt's mouth is conspicuous.

Juvenile grunts are easily identified by the dark central stripe and a spot at the base of the caudal fin.

Concerning a distribution to northern Peru only one confirmation is available so far.

Synonym: Orthostoechus maculicauda Gill, 1862
