The interior of the shell is glossy and is a strong tan to dark brown color, similar to the common colors of the mineral onyx, that refers to the name "Onyx Slippersnail". The shell outside is white.
The Onyx Slippersnail is native to the Eastern Pacific from southern California to Peru. Introduced populations are known from Washington and Japan to Hong Kong.
