Info

Hyperia macrocephala is a psyllid parasitizing on jellyfishes and salps, e.g. infesting the Antarctic jellyfish Diplulmaris antarctica.

The eyes of Hyperia macrocephala occupy most of the surface of the large spherical head.

Hyperia macrocephala belongs to the zooplankton and plays an important role in the food chain, being a special food source of a variety of marine organisms.
Predators that prey intensively on the psyllid include various fish, Adelie penguins, reined penguins, emperor penguins, gentoo penguins, gray-headed albatrosses, Antarctic fulmars, blue petrels and Antarctic prions (pigeon petrel).

Man must pay more attention to the fact that global warming, which is accompanied by an increase in ocean temperatures and has a lasting negative impact on marine fauna, must be stopped urgently, as it has a lasting negative impact on all living creatures within the food chain, and thus also on humans.
The same applies to further heavy metal poisoning, which ultimately end up back in humans through the food chain.

Synonym: Tauria macrocephala Dana, 1853
