Info
Artemisina apollinis (Ridley & Dendy, 1886)
The type locality for the description of Artemisina apollinis is the Kerguelen Archipelago.
Sponges produce more body cells than they need for their own growth and release these excess cells into the ocean or into the aquarium.
Other marine animals then feed on these cells.
Although this also applies to Artemisina apollinis, the sponge is definitely unsuitable for a tropical warm-water aquarium, as it is strictly a cold-water species.
Sponges are also of interest to scientists; steroids can be extracted from Artemisina apollinis.
Synonyms:
Amphilectus apollinis Ridley & Dendy, 1886
Artemisina dianae Topsent, 1907
