Majidae is a family of crabs, with a carapace that is longer than it is broad.The legs can be very long (spider crab).The exoskeleton is covered with bristles attached with algae and other items to act as camouflage.
Leptomithrax gaimardii is commonly known as the giant spider crab or great spider crab. The Carapace round, red-brown, sometimes attached by Seaweed. Carapace up to 16 cm wide, very long leggs to 40 cm in length. Giant Spider Crabs form large groups when breeding.
Giant Spider Crabs are scavengers and eat almost any food available to them.
Habitat Seaweed, reef and sand areas.
Leptomithrax gaimardii is endemic to Southern Australia.
