Husbandry

Istiophorus platypterus, also known as Indo-Pacific sailfish, can be found singly or in larger schools of up to30 animals in almost all oceans at depths up to 40m. Regular sightings and catches are reported from both the West- and the East Atlantic, the East-, West- as well as the Central Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

Sometimes it is doubted that the animals from the different oceans belong to one and the the same kind. Fact is as well, genetic studies by McDowell (2002) and Collette (2006) shows no genetic or morphometric differences. There are also no visible differences e.g. the pectoral fins, the body length or other morphometric evidence.

The Indo-Pacific sailfish, is a fish of the open water, often hunting in groups up to 30 individuals to larger shoals of sardines (South Atlantic & Pacific), or "Flying Fish" (in the Caribbean). Otherwise, they mainly feed on other fish, crustaceans, but also cephalopods. Very rarely you will find theme near reefs or in shallow water.
